I've heard that people tend to see the world through the lens of their experience. So as I begin the journey of sharing my thoughts with the world, (a scary thing to be sure, there's no turning back once it's out there) I hope you don't mind the frequent references to things like racing, movies and random pop culture references. I find little more fascinating.
There are a few reasons to start writing something like this. To be honest it's not because I believe that one more blog can change the world, or that my life has some intrinsically great value that must be shared with the world. Rather, I do it mainly as an avenue to express myself in a way that allows for people to challenge me, to disagree with my core principals. I hope to become a better person by allowing others a chance to help me grow.
It is through adversity that we improve, and identify what we truly believe, and what is just a convenient temporary principal. That is why I have decided to stop waiting, and start doing, to pull the trigger on my dream of being something more.
One consistent theme I hope to impart on this blog is one of questioning. I find in my life, and in the lives of those around me, I am too often confronted with a system of doing because we have always done. There are times when following the path that has been well trekked is the best possible solution for a problem many have faced. However, when it comes time to answer the truly challenging questions we all face, too many of us fall back on the solutions of our past, and ignore the opportunity to improve.
The name "The Eighth Day" came to me when I was still in high school. That seems like it was just a short time ago, but in fact the past races from me, while the future collides with the present at an alarming rate. I wanted "The Eighth Day" to remind people of biblical creation mythology, while challenging their belief of it. I want you to ask yourself what happens after the seventh day, your "day of rest." Do you return to step one? Is it possible to break that system, and instead search for an Eighth Day?
If I accomplish my goal, I will write each week, and hopefully by the time you're done reading it you'll be mad at me. If you totally agree then I've missed my mark completely. I do hope though, that you will think about why you're angry. If you truly believe in the things you say you believe, then I have no power over you.
I know that there are millions of blogs like this floating around on the Internet, and I don't have any aspiration of a great following. (at least not yet) In reality I will be surprised if I manage to escape this without anyone shaming me for thinking of life in terms larger than the next chance to go to work or drink a beer. However, if you're reading this now, I thank you for taking the time and interest in a fairly pedestrian guy who's just trying to pull the trigger.
